Psalm 111 (ESV)
1 Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the works of the Lord,
studied by all who delight in them.
3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and merciful.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy;
8 they are established forever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name!
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever!
Hymn: “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”
Words: Edward Perronet, John Rippon. Music: Oliver Holden.
All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ Name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown Him Lord of all;
bring forth the royal diadem,
Aand crown Him Lord of all.
Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,
ye ransomed from the fall,
hail Him Who saves you by His grace,
and crown Him Lord of all,
hail Him Who saves you by His grace,
and crown Him Lord of all.
Let every kindred, every tribe,
on this terrestrial ball,
to Him all majesty ascribe,
and crown Him Lord of all,
to Him all majesty ascribe,
and crown Him Lord of all
Oh, that with yonder sacred throng
we at His feet may fall!
We’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown Him Lord of all,
we’ll join the everlasting song,
and crown Him Lord of all
Song: “Hymn of Heaven”
Words and music: B. Johnson B. Johnson, C. Davenport, P. Wickham. CCLI #7168894.
How I long to breathe the air of heaven,
where pain is gone and mercy fills the streets,
to look upon the one who bled to save me,
and walk with Him for all eternity.
There will be a day when all will bow before Him,
There will be a day when death will be no more,
Standing face to face with He who died and rose again.
Holy, holy is the Lord.
And ev’ry prayer we prayed in desperation,
the songs of faith we sang through doubt and fear.
In the end we’ll see that it was worth it
when He returns to wipe away our tears.
There will be a day when all will bow before Him,
There will be a day when death will be no more,
Standing face to face with He who died and rose again.
Holy, holy is the Lord.
And on that day, we join the resurrection
and stand beside the heroes of the faith,
with one voice a thousand generations
sing, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
forever He shall reign.”
So let it be today we shout the hymn of heaven,
With angels and the saints, we raise a mighty roar:
“Glory to our God, who gave us life beyond the grave.”
Holy, holy is the Lord.
Hymn: “In Christ Alone”
Words and music: Keith Getty and Stuart Townend.
In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song;
This Cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace when fears are stilled, when strivings cease.
My Comforter, my All in All; here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone, who took on flesh; fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness scorned by the ones He came to save;
’til on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied;
for every sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay; Light of the world by darkness slain.
Then, bursting forth in glorious Day, up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
for I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death, this is the power of Christ in me.
From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from His hand;
’til He returns or calls me home, here in the power of Christ I’ll stand!
Time of Prayer
Sermon: “David’s Son, God’s Son”
Mark 12:35–37 (ESV)
35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’
37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.
Hymn: “Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted”
Words: Thomas Kelly. Music: “O Mein Jesu, Ich Muss Sterben.”
Stricken, smitten, and afflicted, see Him dying on the tree!
’Tis the Christ by man rejected; yes, my soul, ’tis He, ’tis He!
’Tis the long-expected Prophet, David’s Son, yet David’s Lord;
By His Son God now has spoken ’tis the true and faithful Word.
Tell me, ye who hear Him groaning, was there ever grief like His?
Friends through fear His cause disowning, foes insulting His distress;
Many hands were raised to wound Him, none would interpose to save;
But the deepest stroke that pierced Him was the stroke that Justice gave.
Ye who think of sin but lightly, nor suppose the evil great,
Here may view its nature rightly here its guilt may estimate.
Mark the sacrifice appointed, see who bears the awful load;
’Tis the Word, the Lord’s anointed, Son of Man and Son of God.
Here we have a firm foundation; here the refuge of the lost;
Christ, the Rock of our salvation, His the name of which we boast.
Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, sacrifice to cancel guilt!
None shall ever be confounded who on Him their hope have built.
Benediction
Philippians 4:23 (ESV)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
